Artist of the Month
Frances Doherty  Frances Doherty trained in 3 dimensional design at Brighton University and specialised in ceramics. Since leaving college seven years ago, she has been running a multi disciplinary studio in Brighton, and is now working between Brighton and Normandy. Her work is heavily influenced by the metamorphosis of plants, the continual life cycle from bud to seed pod, and to investigate this at close quarters, she photographs then enlarges the pictures. Her resulting ceramic sculptures are a result of this investigation. During the next year, she is embarking on a research project with the botanical gardens in the Isle of Wight, which will result in an exhibition in the summer of 2009. “My current work is based on the forms of fruiting bodies, seed pods and flowers. When you look at these forms in close up, you can see the beautiful mathematics within them, nothing is there by chance”
